Outer Space Cultural Evolution Laboratory (OSCEL) is a dedicated lab that will be used for cultural experiments and missions in space. OSCEL is being developed and designed by Feral Events through a collaborative process with creative and space professionals all over the world. OSCEL Labs will be designed specifically for their environments.
Through a wider program of missions OSCEL aims to:
Experience the space environment first hand. Allow cultural experts time to observe, understand and evaluate.
Experiment with brand new cultural activities and inventions that can only exist in space.
Evolve the boundaries of existing culture to new limits that will only be possible in outer space
Explore the collaborative possibilities between cultural practitioners in space and on Earth in (almost) real time including public involvement (not just engagement) in cultural activities.
Enjoy the results through a stunning program of inflight cultural expression entertainment that can be enjoyed in person and remotely.
Express the findings through education and outreach.

OSCEL facilitates experiments that:
- Cannot be done on Earth.
- Draw from and includes expertise from 'all humankind' especially under-represented voices such as those from non space faring nations and developing countries.
- Do not simply bring Earth culture into space.
- Show clear potential for the evolution of culture.
- Will benefit the lives of future space dwellers.
- Have knock on benefits for other space subjects (navigation, architecture, health etc)
- Have potential knock on benefits for people and environment on Earth.
- Embodies the idea that we are starting from a place of limitless potential.
OUTER SPACE CULTURE EVOLUTION LABORATORY
LAUNCH MAY 2021 EMMPOL V Analog moon simulation mission Analog Astronaut Training Centre in Poland FERAL Director Aoife van Linden Tol, launched OSCEL. Conducting several cultural experiments and activities designed in collaboration with our cultural partners. The mission was made possible by EuroMoonMars, ILEWG , IPSA, SC-KEN, KULeuven, KUDublin & Feral Events |
Feral Events launched OSCEL with a series of cultural activities and experiments during the EMMPOL V mission that tested protocol, technical requirements, astronaut skills and time requirements as well as Moon/Earth collaboration processes in order to better understand how to create dedicated cultural missions in space. The experiments informed the feasibility of future cultural missions on the International Space Station, Commercial Low Earth Orbit Space Stations, Lunar Gateway and Lunar bases in the future.
The experiments also assessed crew response to the activities including performance, cohesion, problem solving and other human psychological and physical factors.
