"Art on the Walls" was an open call created by Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health trust set up to commission local artists to bring the walls of Blossom Court to life.
Blossom Court at St Ann’s Hospital in the heart of Haringey is part of the major redevelopment of the site to significantly improve facilities for service users, staff and local people and to provide a modern, fit for purpose, healthcare campus for local people. The environment was purposefully designed to be as light and spacious as possible and patients say they feel more able to join in with groups in the larger, more open activity rooms or take some time out in the purpose-built quiet rooms.
Feral Events teamed up with artist Gregory Derham, who we met on the Tulip ward at Blossom Court while delivering workshops for Mind Murals. Greg is a talented artist and wanted to apply for the commission. Greg was born in Crouch End and has lived there all his life. He has a deep connection with the mental health service in Haringey. He has been sectioned six times at St Ann’s Hospital. He was diagnosed with bi-polar twenty years ago and has lived with suicidal depressive and manic bouts which can last from 8-25 months. We were blown away by his talent and by how important his art is to his mental health and so we supported his application by helping to manage the project and allow him to do what he does best - make art!
The project included delivering two workshops on the Tulip ward based on movement and music, key themes of Gregs work.
Greg created one large scale mixed media artwork for the recreation room. In addition six drawings and nine collaged tulips were digitally printed on vinyl and installed around the ward at almost life size.
